Eating Devices for Tremors

Tremors can turn simple daily skills like eating, dressing, cooking, and writing into a

chore, be incredibly frustrating, and affect your self-confidence.  The good news is there’s a variety of devices now.  These devices help control tremors which not only make life easier but help preserve your independence and ability to remain in your home environment.

Tremors can be managed in several ways when eating.  We have highlighted a few of the many devices available.

 1. Adding weight to the silverware to dampen the hand tremors.

2. Attaching non-slip handles onto silverware allows you to grip with your entire hand.

 3. Two-handled cups let you use both hands to hold the cup firmly.

 4. Wide-handled silverware gives you a better grip using all fingers and palm

5. Plates or bowls with a high edge contain food when scooping it up off dish.

6. Suction bases or silicone mats secure the plate and bowl to the table.

7. Covered sipper-like cups or covered and using a straw help minimize spill.

8.  Light ½ to 1-pound wrist weights or gloveless hand weights use weight to help dampen the hand tremors.

9. Electronic devices placed on your hand or wrist counter-act the tremor to dampen it.

10. Utensils and cups covered with silicone grip help to hold them.

There are also strategies to dampen the movement:

1.      Cover all liquids.

2.    Only fill the cup ½ to ¾ high.

3..      Positioning – keep your elbow close to your body and stabilize placing your forearm on the table to help reduce tremors.
