Technology to Dampen Those Tremors
There's a variety of adaptive devices that can make great gifts for someone with tremors. They make life easier and more enjoyable by reducing the effort, and / or frustration of daily tasks, increase independence and ability to remain in the home, reduce the work, and boost confidence. Most of these devices look no different than their ordinary counterparts.
If tremors and similar unintended movements affect your arm movement, simple modifications or dampening the movement typically helps you gain control. Oftentimes therapy strategies like those below are insufficient. These include:
Only fill cups/bowls ½ to ¼ full. Cover them and use a straw or sipper-like top to drink.
Carry items with your elbow close to your body.
Rest your forearm on a table so just your wrist and hand are moving.
There are several devices on the market that can control or dampen the movement. They typically use weights or electronic devices to counteract the tremor movement; placing the object on silicone, a non-slip table mat, or securing it with suction, and modifying the grip.
